Getting Started with Genspark: A Beginner's Guide

Genspark is a powerful platform for building custom AI agents—what we call Super Agents. Whether you're automating client intake, document processing, or research tasks, this guide will walk you through creating your first agent.

What is Genspark?

Genspark is an AI platform that allows you to create custom agents tailored to specific tasks and workflows. Unlike generic AI tools, Super Agents are configured with:

  • Domain-specific knowledge about your industry and processes
  • Custom instructions that guide behavior and responses
  • Integration capabilities with your existing tools
  • Persistent memory across conversations

Step 1: Create Your Account

Head to genspark.ai and create an account. The free tier is sufficient for learning and building your first agent.

Step 2: Define Your Agent's Purpose

Before touching the platform, clearly define what you want your agent to do. Answer these questions:

  • What specific task will this agent perform?
  • Who will interact with this agent?
  • What information does the agent need to do its job?
  • What outputs should the agent produce?
  • What should the agent NOT do?

Example: Client Intake Agent

  • Task: Gather information from prospective clients
  • Users: Website visitors interested in services
  • Inputs: Client's industry, challenges, timeline, budget
  • Outputs: Structured intake summary, qualification score
  • Boundaries: Don't provide legal advice or pricing

Step 3: Configure Your Agent

In the Genspark dashboard, create a new Custom Super Agent and configure these key elements:

Agent Name & Description

Choose a clear, descriptive name. This helps users understand the agent's purpose immediately.

System Instructions

This is where you define your agent's personality, capabilities, and constraints. A good system instruction includes:

  • Role definition: "You are a client intake specialist for a consulting firm..."
  • Behavioral guidelines: "Always be professional, friendly, and helpful..."
  • Task instructions: "Your job is to gather information about the prospect..."
  • Output format: "At the end of the conversation, provide a summary..."
  • Boundaries: "Never provide specific pricing or legal advice..."

Knowledge Base

Upload documents that your agent should reference: service descriptions, FAQs, process guides, industry information. This gives your agent context-specific knowledge.

Step 4: Test Your Agent

Before deploying, thoroughly test your agent:

  1. Run through the expected conversation flow
  2. Try edge cases and unusual questions
  3. Test boundary conditions (what happens with inappropriate requests)
  4. Check output quality and formatting
  5. Verify knowledge base retrieval accuracy

Common Issues to Watch For

  • Agent goes off-topic or provides information outside its scope
  • Responses are too long or too short
  • Agent doesn't use provided knowledge base effectively
  • Tone doesn't match your brand

Step 5: Iterate and Improve

Your first version won't be perfect. That's expected. Based on testing:

  • Refine system instructions for clearer guidance
  • Add or update knowledge base documents
  • Adjust response format specifications
  • Add examples of ideal responses

Step 6: Deploy and Monitor

Once satisfied with testing, deploy your agent. Genspark provides a shareable link you can embed on your website or share directly.
